The studio investigated conditioning properties of the air, and associated parameters in order to find relationships between these elements that are not so apparent. These experiments generated many avenues of exploration in the process of relating properties of air, such as humidity and scent, light and colour, or sound and air movement, and encouraged investigation into other fields. Our team chose to study the relationship between electromagnetic radiation and scent. The process of relating these two properties was successful in that we started with a certain conception of the relationship between the two, which evolved and developed more complex meaning through our experimentation.
The core of our interest was in generating disruption between the compartmentalized network grid and collective social platform through programmatically-derived scent.
This condition generates a heterogeneous composition of ephemeral activities and relationships, extending the urban street onto the site, which expands the invisible boundaries of the compressed space.
In the experience of the urban, the physical boundaries of space are compressed through the introduction of the global network. Generating disruption between these two conditions exposes one reality to the other. As a response, the typical fitness program can be minimized, and extended beyond the physical limitations of the immediate space.
Gentrification results in a privatization and compartmentalization of space and air through the imposition of a global networked grid onto the local, defined through the property of electromagnetic radiation. As a response, the Networked Gym is reinterpreted as a stratified field condition, with varying degrees of compression and expansion.
